Vigorous efforts continue to increase the production of pulses and oilseeds in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is intensifying efforts to become a leading global exporter of pulses and oilseeds, focusing on agricultural reforms and production growth.
During the 13th International Pulses and Oilseeds Conference, held on November 19-20, 2024, at the Adwa Victory Memorial Museum in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's Trade Minister highlighted the essential role these crops play in boosting export income and improving the livelihoods of local farmers.
The Ethiopian government is driving the growth of pulses and oilseeds through crop diversification, infrastructure development, and maintaining high-quality standards.
These measures are expected to strengthen Ethiopia’s position in the global market. The government has also taken steps to attract foreign investment, including liberalizing the agricultural sector, offering a market-friendly exchange rate, and prioritizing agro-processing.
These efforts are aimed at increasing both the production and export of value-added products, creating employment, and fostering long-term growth.
Foreign businesses are encouraged to engage with Ethiopia's agricultural sector, as new policies allow them to directly purchase pulses and oilseeds from Ethiopian farmers and processors.
Despite its potential, Ethiopia's capacity to increase production of these crops remains underutilized, presenting significant opportunities for both local and international stakeholders.
