Mustard prices rise due to improved trading and limited supply
New Delhi. Limited stocks of mustard are left with producers, stockists, and government agencies, resulting in low supply in the markets. Sporadic arrivals of new crop are expected to begin next month. Sowing of mustard, the most important oilseed crop of the Rabi season, has been completed, and the production area has increased by 2.79 lakh hectares from 86.57 lakh hectares last year to 89.36 lakh hectares this year, which is approximately 10 lakh hectares more than the normal average area of 79.17 lakh hectares.
Prices
During the week of January 10-16, mustard prices increased by Rs. 100-200 per quintal in the major wholesale markets of the leading producing states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Gujarat, while in the Sirsa market of Haryana, the price jumped by Rs. 300 to reach Rs. 6800 per quintal.
42% Condition Mustard
The price of 42 percent condition mustard remained stable at Rs. 6950 per quintal in Delhi, but increased by Rs. 125 to Rs. 7275 per quintal in Jaipur. Prices of average quality mustard improved by Rs. 200 per quintal in Alwar and Rs. 100 per quintal in Kota, Rajasthan.
Uttar Pradesh
In Uttar Pradesh, prices increased by Rs. 75 per quintal in Hapur and Rs. 175 per quintal in Agra market. In short, mustard prices in all major markets are running above the Minimum Support Price (MSP) declared by the central government, and if the prices remain at this level or around it in the coming months, government agencies (NAFED/HAFED) will not need to purchase it from the farmers.
Mustard Oil
Due to the increase in mustard prices, the price of mustard oil also strengthened by Rs. 1 to 3 per kg. In Delhi, the price of expeller mustard oil rose by ₹20 to ₹1450 per 10 kg, while in Kota, the price of kachi ghani mustard oil jumped by ₹55 to ₹1490 per quintal.
Arrivals
Typically, 5-6 lakh tonnes of mustard arrive in February, while this increases to 14-15 lakh tonnes in March. The strong supply of new mustard continues in April and May as well.
Mustard Cake (DOC)
During the week under review, mustard cake and DOC also witnessed good trading activity, and prices remained firm.
