Pea prices rise due to the imposition of a 30% import duty on yellow peas
Kanpur. Pea prices rose this week due to the imposition of the import duty, resulting in weak selling by importers and stockists. Pea prices rose significantly during the current week. The Revenue Department of the Union Finance Ministry issued a notification on Wednesday announcing a total import duty of 30 percent on yellow peas. According to the ministry, this duty includes a 10 percent customs duty and a 20 percent Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC). The new duty will be effective from November 1, 2025. The government has also clarified that no duty will be applicable on bills of lading issued until October 31, 2025. Previously, the duty-free exemption on yellow peas imports was extended until March 31, 2026, but this has now been reduced to October 31, 2025. The 30% import duty, effective November 1, 2025, has created a bullish sentiment in the pea market.
In the coming weeks, imports will likely decline, pressure on domestic supply, and price increases will likely persist. In the long term, this move could prove beneficial in encouraging local production and reducing import dependence.
