Heavy Inflows of Wheat Across All Markets, Large and Small

New Delhi: A robust supply of wheat is currently being witnessed across all markets—both large and small—in the country's key producing states, including Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Bihar. Furthermore, regular procurement of the grain is being undertaken by government agencies as well as private trading firms and flour mills.
Prices
Consequently, the market is currently characterized by either rising prices or a general stability in rates. During the week of April 18–24, a significant decline of ₹250 per quintal (at the upper end of the price range) was observed in wheat prices solely at the Bundi market in Rajasthan. In Uttar Pradesh, wheat prices softened slightly—by ₹10 and ₹30 per quintal, respectively—in the markets of Shahjahanpur and Mainpuri.
Delhi
Conversely, in Delhi, aided by normal market arrivals and brisk trading activity, wheat prices rose by ₹110 per quintal, reaching a range of ₹2,650–₹2,690. Similarly, in Itarsi (Madhya Pradesh), prices climbed by ₹100 per quintal, settling at a range of ₹2,380–₹2,600.
Uttar Pradesh
Markets in Uttar Pradesh are witnessing keen interest in wheat procurement from flour millers, food processors, traders, and stockists. The Union Food Secretary has also urged flour millers to reduce their reliance on government-allocated wheat, encouraging them instead to procure larger quantities directly from open markets and to strive for self-sufficiency in this regard.
Rainfall
Due to unseasonal rainfall, the overall quality of the wheat harvest has deteriorated this season; consequently, the demand for high-quality grain is expected to rise. Exporters may also seek to capitalize on the situation by attempting to procure wheat at lower price points. The trend of ample wheat supply in the markets is expected to continue.
