Wheat Prices Firm Up Amid Buying by Millers and Traders

New Delhi: Wheat arrivals remain robust in key markets across the major wheat-producing states. Procurement is being actively conducted by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and state-level agencies at government procurement centers, while significant activity by millers, processors, traders, and stockists is being observed in the open markets. Notably, by encouraging the private sector to procure substantial quantities of wheat directly from farmers, the government has indirectly signaled that stock limits on wheat are unlikely to be imposed this year.
Delhi / Madhya Pradesh
During the week spanning April 25 to May 2, wheat prices in Delhi firmed up by ₹15 per quintal, reaching a range of ₹2,690–₹2,725 per quintal. Similarly, markets in Rajkot (Gujarat), as well as Indore and Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh), witnessed an upward revision of ₹50 per quintal each. However, the Itarsi market saw a decline of ₹50 per quintal.
Rajasthan
In Rajasthan, the Kota and Baran markets remained stable, while the Bundi market surged by ₹75 per quintal. Several markets in Uttar Pradesh recorded a price improvement of ₹20–₹30 per quintal, and the Jalna market in Maharashtra also witnessed a rise of ₹50 per quintal.
MSP / Exports
This year, the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for wheat has been fixed at ₹2,585 per quintal, although current market prices in many mandis (markets) are trading below this level. The government has authorized the export of 5 million tonnes of wheat and 1 million tonnes of wheat products, and exporters have already become active in this regard.
Government Procurement
Government procurement of wheat is currently lagging slightly behind last year's pace; however, this has had no discernible impact on market sentiment. The Union Food Secretary has advised millers and processors to procure wheat directly from farmers in the open markets to the greatest extent possible, rather than relying on government stocks to meet their operational requirements. The trend of heavy wheat arrivals is expected to continue throughout the current month.
