Kolkata. Food Corporation of India (FCI) will start wheat auction under Open Market Sale Scheme (OMSS) in West Bengal from the current month (August).
According to official sources, weekly e-auction will be started on M-Junction platform for wheat sale.
Similarly, sale of about 1448 tonnes of rice will also be started temporarily in Sikkim under OMSS. FCI Deputy General Manager (Kolkata) has said that there is sufficient production of rice in West Bengal, so traders show very little interest in its purchase under OMSS.
But there is a good demand of millers / processors in wheat. There is no need for weekly auction (sale) for rice in Bengal.
If ever the need is felt, this matter will be raised before the state government and only after that any decision will be taken.
There is limited production of wheat in West Bengal, therefore there is a huge demand for government wheat, therefore this important food grain will be sold from the wheat buffer stock in the warehouses of Punjab,
Haryana and Madhya Pradesh. During the last financial year, about 7 lakh tons of wheat was sold in Bengal under OMSS.
The Central Government has already given permission to Food Corporation of India to start auction sale of wheat and rice under OMSS and the minimum reserve price has also been fixed for this.
The base price of wheat of FAQ category has been fixed at Rs 2325 per quintal and that of URS variety at Rs 2300 per quintal. Freight will be charged separately on this.
