Freezing temperatures and very limited snow cover in parts of the HRW wheat-producing regions are adding some premium to the market ahead of the weekend.
The USDA Export Sales report released this morning showed wheat sales of 618,076 metric tons in the week ending January 15. This marked a 9-week high and was more than three times the volume sold during the same week last year. The largest buyer was unknown destinations with 130,600 metric tons. Mexico purchased 115,900 metric tons, while South Korea bought 95,500 metric tons of wheat.
According to the CFTC Commitment of Traders data, managed money added another 4,471 contracts to their net short position in CBT wheat as of January 20, taking the net short position to 110,700 contracts by Tuesday. In KC wheat, speculators were net short 13,018 contracts as of Tuesday, an increase of just 237 contracts on the week.
