Vancouver. An anonymous complaint at the Nacala Port - the busiest port of the African country Mozambique - caused a stir and halted all business activities.
Since the maximum shipment of pigeon pea (tuvar) to India is done from this port, its closure is likely to affect its imports to India.
Nacala Port is considered a very important port for the export of agricultural products from Mozambique.
The unexpected incident there can be a cause of serious concern for Indian importers as the harvesting season of the new pigeon pea crop has begun in Mozambique.
A large number of ships often visit Nacala Port. At least three large ships - Doris Cebu and Gulf Express - had been loaded with important agricultural products but after an anonymous complaint, they are not being allowed to depart.
These ships are loaded with perishable agricultural products, including a large stock of pigeon pea (tuvar) which was to be sent to India.
It is understood that most of the ships whose operations have been stopped have been loaded with tur and most of it is being sent to India.
Apart from this, many other agricultural and food products are also loaded in these ships. This is causing great difficulty to both importers and exporters.
After receiving an anonymous complaint (call), intensive and comprehensive investigation has been started at the port. Every container and sacks have been checked.
It is difficult to say how much time it will take. Port officials say that this investigation is necessary for the safety of the ships and it may take several days or weeks or even months.
This means that at least during the current month, it has become difficult for ships carrying tur to depart from Nakala port.
