Decline in pea and sunflower exports from Ukraine

Kiev. Although the export of peas and sunflower from Ukraine, a country located in the Black Sea region, increased during January 2025 as compared to December 2024, there was a significant decline in shipments on a seasonal basis.

According to the available data, pea exports from Ukraine increased from 9,057 tonnes in December 2024 to 13,602 tonnes in January 2025. In January 2025, Ukraine exported the highest 8197 tonnes of peas to Turkey, 1275 tonnes to Malaysia and 802 tonnes to Pakistan.

But in the current marketing season, till January 2025, the total export of peas from Ukraine could reach only 21,936 tonnes, which was much less than the shipment of 35,537 tonnes during the same period of the previous season.

As far as whole sunflower (sunflower seed) is concerned, its export performance was also similar to that of peas.

Under this, sunflower exports from Ukraine jumped from 1085 tonnes in December 2024 to 20,120 tonnes in January 2025, but on a seasonal basis it could reach only 32,857 tonnes by January 2025, which was much less than the shipment of 53,229 tonnes till January 2024 in the previous marketing season.

During January 2025, the highest shipment of 19,080 tonnes of sunflower seed was made from Ukraine to France, while 265 tonnes were exported to Turkey and 223 tonnes to the Czech Republic.

Ukraine's Odessa port has been damaged by Russia with a massive attack of bombs and missiles and the movement of Ukrainian ships through the Black Sea has also come to a halt. Sunflower oil is imported from Ukraine to India.
