New Delhi. Directorate of Sugar and Vegetable Oil, a subordinate body of the Union Ministry of Food, Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution,
has fixed a quota of 23.50 lakh tonnes of sugar (free sale) for units across the country for sale in the domestic division during April 2025, which is 50 thousand tonnes more than the quota of 23 lakh tonnes fixed for March 2025 but 1.50 lakh tonnes less than the quota of 25 lakh tonnes fixed for April 2024. Earlier,
free sale quota of 23.50-23.50 lakh tonnes of sugar was issued for January and February 2025. In this way, a total of 91.50 lakh tonnes of sugar sale quota has been issued for the first four months of the current year i.e.
January-April 2025, which is 2 lakh tonnes less than the quota of 93.50 lakh tonnes fixed for the same months in the year 2024 but 4.50 lakh tonnes more than the quota of 87 lakh tonnes fixed for the same period of the year 2023.
In fact, due to the hustle and bustle of the Lok Sabha elections last year, the free sale quota of sugar was increased in April, May and June.
It is noteworthy that the highest monthly free sale quota of 29 lakh tonnes of sugar was fixed in October 2023 and the second highest quota of 27.50 lakh tonnes was fixed in August 2023. After this, a quota of 27 lakh tonnes was issued in May 2024.
With the increasing heat, the industrial demand and consumption of sugar has started increasing and this trend is likely to continue in April.
Considering this, the free sale quota of 23.50 lakh tonnes of sugar fixed for the month of April does not seem to be very big and the millers should not face any difficulty in selling it.
The price of sugar is also expected to remain strong. The export quota of 10 lakh tonnes of sugar can also strengthen the market.
