Food Oil Contamination Scandal Deepens in Uttar Pradesh

Lucknow: The controversy surrounding the alleged detection of lead particles in samples from over a dozen food oil manufacturing companies and firms in Uttar Pradesh is intensifying. These companies have been ordered to halt their oil business operations. In light of this, the *Bhartiya Udyog Vyapar Pratinidhi Mandal* (Indian Industry and Trade Representatives' Association) recently met with the Commissioner of the Food Safety and Drug Administration. Their objective was to seek relief for the manufacturers and request a reconsideration of the issued order, during which they apprised the Commissioner of their grievances. The Commissioner assured the delegation that a resolution to the issue would be found.

It is noteworthy that on February 23, 2026, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) collected samples—including mustard oil, palm oil, and solvent-extracted oil—from 14 food oil firms and companies across various districts of Uttar Pradesh, such as Kanpur, Agra, Meerut, Lucknow, Hapur, and Gorakhpur. These samples were subsequently tested at a private laboratory, following which several samples were declared unsafe for consumption on health grounds.

The companies whose samples were deemed unsafe argue that they have no control over the lead content present in their food oils; the lead may originate from other sources. Under these circumstances, they contend that issuing a stringent order—imposing a ban on the production, marketing (trade), and storage of these food oils solely on the basis of tests conducted at a single private laboratory—is neither just nor equitable. The Commissioner has given assurances that all aspects pertinent to the matter will be given serious consideration, and a resolution to the issue will be achieved.
