Thiruvananthapuram. Monsoon has once again become active in the country's far western state- Kerala. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for very heavy rain in Kerala's Alapppuram district and an orange alert for torrential rain in seven other districts.
The Meteorological Department had issued a red alert for rain in Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts on 22 June. Red alert indicates heavy to very heavy or more than 20 cm of rain within just 24 hours.
The districts of Kerala for which orange alert for rain has been issued include Kannur, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram and Kasaragod districts,
where orange alert for rain was also issued on 23 June. Orange alert is issued when 11 cm to 20 cm rainfall is expected while yellow alert is issued for rainfall between 6 to 11 cm.
The Meteorological Department had declared yellow alert for rainfall in many districts of Kerala for 22-23 June.
It is noteworthy that during the current year, the southwest monsoon reached Kerala on 30 May itself, but after a few days of activity, it disappeared. Now the activity of monsoon has increased again in this state,
due to which other plantation crops including cardamom, betel nut and black pepper are likely to get relief. Most of the black pepper crop has been harvested while the harvesting of cardamom crop is likely to start soon.
There is a possibility of improvement in the quality of grains due to this rain. Other states of South India are also receiving good monsoon rains, which is helping a lot in the cultivation of Kharif crops.
