Huge fall in government stock of tur due to limited purchase

New Delhi. The quantity of pigeon pea (tuvar) in the central buffer stock has come down to only around 50 thousand tonnes. Its purchase could not be done properly in some producing states.
It is worth noting that after not getting much success in purchase at minimum support price, the government had also tried to buy tur at the prevailing market price, but even then the farmers did not show much enthusiasm in selling their pulses to the government.
According to senior official sources of the Department of Food and Public Distribution, during the last two years the government was not able to purchase sufficient quantity of tur from the farmers in the domestic markets and since the purchase was less and some traders-millers did not disclose the details of their stock or gave only partial details, therefore the government had to take the decision to impose storage limit on tur.
It is worth mentioning that the Food Ministry issued an order on 21st June and imposed the stock limit on Tuvar, Desi Chana and Kabuli Chana with immediate effect.
This order will remain effective till 30th December 2024. The government hopes that this order will remain effective till 30th September 2024.
The government hopes that this rule will increase the supply and availability of these pulses in the domestic market and will bring down the prices.
Experts say that the off season for supply of tur to India and African countries is going on and its good import can be done only from Myanmar. In African countries like Mozambique,
Malawi and Sudan etc., preparation for harvesting of new tur crop starts at the end of next month or beginning of August but this time due to heavy rains and severe floods in Mozambique and Malawi, sowing was delayed by 15-20 days due to which there is a possibility of delay in harvesting of the crop. Due to this, there is doubt on the import at the right time.
As far as Kabuli Chana is concerned, it is usually kept outside the scope of stock limit but this time stock limit has been imposed on it also. Production of Desi Chana has reduced and limited import is also happening from abroad.
