Kharif 2025 Sowing Analysis – Tur (Pigeon Pea)
★ Tur is one of the most important kharif pulses crops and plays a crucial role in India's agricultural economy.
★ According to the Ministry of Agriculture (GOI), as of 18 July 2025, tur has been sown across 30.09 lakh hectares in India, which is 1.61 lakh hectares less than the same period last year (31.70 lakh hectares).

State-wise data:
★ Andhra Pradesh (as of 23 July 2025): Sowing stood at 0.68 lakh hectares, compared to 0.82 lakh hectares last year — a decline of 0.14 lakh hectares.
★ Gujarat (as of 21 July 2025): Area sown was 1.16 lakh hectares, down by 0.54 lakh hectares from last year's 1.70 lakh hectares.
★ Karnataka (as of 18 July 2025): Sowing reached 12.22 lakh hectares, showing a sharp fall of 2.48 lakh hectares from 14.70 lakh hectares in 2024.
★ Maharashtra (as of 21 July 2025): Tur sowing was at 11.44 lakh hectares, slightly lower than 11.60 lakh hectares last year — a decline of 0.16 lakh hectares.
★ Telangana (as of 23 July 2025): The only state showing positive growth, with 4.21 lakh hectares sown compared to 3.65 lakh hectares last year — a rise of 0.56 lakh hectares.
★ The combined sowing in these five major states stands at 29.71 lakh hectares, which is 2.76 lakh hectares less than the 32.47 lakh hectares recorded in the same period last year.
★ Significant decline in sowing has been observed in key tur-producing states like Karnataka and Maharashtra. This may impact the overall production outlook. Notably, many farmers in these regions have shifted their focus from tur to maize this season.
★ It is too early to comment on the final production estimates, as they will depend heavily on rainfall patterns and crop performance in the coming weeks.
