Kharif Crop Acreage in Gujarat Nearly Equal to Last Year

Ahmedabad. After initially lagging behind, the Kharif crop production area in Gujarat, the western state of India, has finally reached very close to last year's level.

According to the latest report from the state agriculture department, the total Kharif crop production area in Gujarat reached 84.49 lakh hectares as of October 6th, lagging behind the 84.53 lakh hectares sown during the same period last year by about 4,000 hectares.

According to official data, during the current peak season, compared to last year, the area under paddy cultivation in Gujarat increased from 8.87 lakh hectares to 9.04 lakh hectares,

the area under millet improved from 1.68 lakh hectares to 1.73 lakh hectares, but the area under sorghum declined from 19,000 hectares to 12,000 hectares, and the area under maize declined from 2.86 lakh hectares to 2.81 lakh hectares. The total area under paddy and coarse grains improved from 13.74 lakh hectares last year to 13.81 lakh hectares this year.

The area under pulses also increased from 4.01 lakh hectares to 4.61 lakh hectares during this period due to pigeon pea. The area under pigeon pea increased from 2.39 lakh hectares to 3.06 lakh hectares,

but the area under green gram fell from 55 thousand hectares to 49 thousand hectares. The area under black gram remained at last year's level of 84 thousand hectares.

The area under oilseed crops in Gujarat also increased by 3 lakh hectares from 28.95 lakh hectares to 31.95 lakh hectares, driven by peanuts. Under this scheme,

the area under peanut cultivation jumped from 19.08 lakh hectares to 22.02 lakh hectares, and the area under castor cultivation increased from 6.35 lakh hectares to 6.73 lakh hectares.

However, the area under soybean cultivation declined from 3.01 lakh hectares to 2.78 lakh hectares, and the area under sesame cultivation declined from 49 thousand hectares to 41 thousand hectares.

Similarly, the area under cotton cultivation in the state declined from 23.69 lakh hectares last year to 20.83 lakh hectares this time, and the area under guar cultivation declined from 85 thousand hectares to 75 thousand hectares.

The sowing of Kharif crops has concluded in Gujarat. While the crop condition is generally considered normal or satisfactory, there is a possibility of crop damage due to extremely heavy rainfall in some areas, resulting in flooding. Harvesting and supply to markets for peanuts and other Kharif crops has already begun.
