Kharif crop sowing area in Karnataka increased three times to above 33 lakh hectares

Bangalore. Due to regular monsoon rains in Karnataka, a major agricultural producing state of South India, tremendous enthusiasm and attraction of farmers is being seen in the cultivation of Kharif crops. According to official figures, compared to last year,
this time till June 21, the production area of Kharif crops in Karnataka has jumped 295 percent to 33.10 lakh hectares, whereas last year it could reach only 8.87 lakh hectares. The sowing figure of the current season has increased almost two times from the five-year average area of 15.40 lakh hectares.
Karnataka Agriculture Department has set a target of sowing of Kharif crops this year at 82 lakh hectares, out of which sowing has been completed in 40 percent area. In comparison to last year,
during the current Kharif season, the area under paddy production in Karnataka has jumped from 1.80 lakh hectares to 6.20 lakh hectares,
the area under coarse cereals has increased from 1.72 lakh hectares to 10.70 lakh hectares. Out of this, 8.78 lakh hectares is in rain-fed areas and 1.90 lakh hectares is in irrigated areas. The area under maize alone has increased from 1.25 lakh hectares to 8.99 lakh hectares.
As far as pulses are concerned, its production area has jumped from 1.22 lakh hectares last year to 10.40 lakh hectares this time. In this too,
the area under pigeon pea has increased from 13 thousand hectares to 5.73 lakh hectares and the area under moong has increased from 49 thousand hectares to 3.36 lakh hectares.
The area under oilseed crops in the state has also jumped from 73 thousand hectares to 4.30 lakh hectares, while the area under sugarcane has increased from 3.22 lakh hectares to 4.56 lakh hectares and the sowing area of cotton has increased from 74 thousand hectares to 2.45 lakh hectares.
