★ The Gujarat government has decided to release irrigation water through the Narmada canal network from June 11 to support ongoing kharif sowing activities. The decision comes at a time when more than 173,000 hectares have already been brought under kharif cultivation, while the monsoon is expected to reach the state after June 15.
★ So far Cotton has been sown on about 93,000 hectares.
★ Groundnut has been planted on around 55,000 hectares.
★ Nearly 110,000 hectares of the total sown area are located across 11 districts of the Saurashtra region.
★ The availability of Narmada canal water will provide critical moisture for sowing, seed germination, and early crop establishment until monsoon rainfall becomes widespread.
★ The Narmada canal network is a vital irrigation lifeline for agricultural regions in Saurashtra, Kutch, and North Gujarat, playing a key role in supporting kharif crops during the early part of the season.
