Saskatoon. In Canada, the pea sowing area is expected to increase by 2 percent to 12.60 lakh hectares in the current year as compared to last year,
while the average yield rate of the crop will also increase if the weather and rainfall conditions remain favorable. 52 percent of the pea area is located in Saskatchewan province and 42 percent in Alberta,
while the remaining 6 percent of the sowing area is in other states. The Ministry of Agriculture has estimated the domestic production of peas to increase to 30 lakh tonnes in the 2024-25 season and has expressed the possibility of an increase of 2 percent in its total availability.
But there has been no change in the estimate of pea exports and it has been kept stable at 25 lakh tonnes, which is equal to the 2023-24 season.
According to the ministry, China and India are the two top buyer countries of Canadian peas. India will be monitored closely as duty-free imports have been allowed there only till October 31, 2024.
The outstanding stock of peas in Canada may increase to 2.40 lakh tonnes at the end of the 2024-24 season. But with the expectation of better global production, the average price of peas is likely to remain slightly below the 2023-24 season.
As far as the current marketing season of 2023-24 is concerned, it will end at the end of next month. This time India had a great export of peas from Canada,
but exports to China decreased somewhat because it is being imported in large quantities from Russia. Exports of peas to America, Bangladesh and Pakistan have also decreased.
