According to the Union Agriculture Ministry, 355.35 lakh tonnes of coarse grains were produced in the Kharif season of 2023-24, which is expected to reach 378.18 lakh tonnes with an increase of 22.83 lakh tonnes in the current Kharif season of 2024-25. Under this, the production of maize is estimated to jump from 222.45 lakh tonnes to 22.96 lakh tonnes to reach 245.41 lakh tonnes, but the production of Shri Anna is likely to fall by 13 thousand tonnes from 132.90 lakh tonnes to 132.77 lakh tonnes. The category of Shri Anna includes jowar, bajra, ragi and small millets. In comparison to last year, during the current Kharif marketing season, the production of Jowar is estimated to increase from 15.09 lakh tons to 21.96 lakh tons, but on the other hand, the production of millet is likely to decrease from 96.63 lakh tons to 93.75 lakh tons, the production of Ragi is likely to fall from 16.70 lakh tons to 13.90 lakh tons and the production of small millets is likely to slip from 4.49 lakh tons to 3.15 lakh tons.
In comparison to last year, this time during the Kharif season, there was a good increase in the sowing area of maize and jowar and the area of Ragi remained stable to a great extent, but the area of millet decreased. The crop was also damaged due to heavy rains and floods in some areas. The harvesting and preparation of the new crop has started.
