Projected Pea and Lentil Acreage in Canada for 2025/26
★ The Canadian pulse market is currently facing significant uncertainty following China’s imposition of a 100% tariff on Canadian peas.
★ Additionally, potential tariffs from India and the U.S. are causing concern among farmers.
Peas:
★ According to early StatCan surveys, pea acreage was expected to increase by 10% to 3.52 million acres. However, due to China's tariff, many farmers may alter their plans. It is estimated that pea acreage could decline by 500,000 acres (16%).
★ The market's future will depend on how China, India, and the U.S. approach tariffs.

Lentils:
★ India has imposed a 10% tariff on Canadian lentils, but this has not significantly impacted planting intentions.
★ StatCan estimates that lentil acreage may decline by only 1%, reaching 4.17 million acres.
★ Some farmers may shift from peas to lentils.
★ If all three countries impose tariffs, even with reduced production in Canada, supply may still exceed demand, leading to lower prices.
