Sorriso. Due to tremendous increase in sowing area and better average yield rate, sesame production in Latin American country-Brazil is expected to increase to a very high level.
Central agency-CONAB has estimated the total production of sesame in Brazil during the current season of 2023-24 to jump 68 percent as compared to 2022-23 to reach 2.93 lakh tonnes.
Similarly, the sowing area of sesame is also expected to increase by 62 percent to reach 5.86 lakh hectares (14.40 lakh acres), while the average yield rate of sesame is expected to be 500 kg per hectare or 450 pounds per acre.
It is worth noting that sesame is a relatively new oilseed for Brazil. Earlier it was cultivated in a very limited area, but now its area has increased to close to 6 lakh hectares.
In fact, after the harvesting of soybean crop, sesame has now been included in the crops cultivated on a large scale along with Safrinha corn and cotton.
Its area is increasing year after year in Mato Grosso, Brazil's most prominent agricultural producer state, because farmers are getting attractive returns from its cultivation. During the 2023-24 season, sesame production in Mato Grosso alone is estimated to increase to 1.91 lakh tonnes,
which is 66 percent of the total domestic production (293 lakh tonnes). About 42 percent of sesame is produced in the Canarana region in Mato Grosso. Harvesting and preparation of the new crop of sesame will start soon in Brazil.
