Slow Monsoon Progress Towards the West Coast

Thiruvananthapuram: The pace of the Southwest Monsoon's advance—which reached the southern coast of Kerala on June 4—has slowed down somewhat, although it remains active across South India.
An alert for torrential rain was issued for 15 districts in Tamil Nadu. Similarly, dense cloud cover prevails over the coastal belt stretching from Karnataka to Kerala. Rainfall has also been recorded in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Puducherry.
While the northern limit of the monsoon has moved eastward to reach the hilly regions of West Bengal and Sikkim, its western flank has stalled, failing to progress beyond Goa, Konkan, and certain other coastal districts of Maharashtra. This stagnation is delaying rainfall in the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions of Maharashtra as well as in Gujarat.
According to the Meteorological Department, the monsoon is unlikely to arrive in these areas on schedule; however, heavy rainfall could occur once the next active phase begins.
It is expected to extend up to Surat in southern Gujarat. Meanwhile, reports of rainfall have been received from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and adjacent hilly states, but this is not monsoon rain.
