Water Levels in Dams Drop in Eastern and Western Regions Too

New Delhi. Water levels in dams and reservoirs across the country's eastern and western regions have dropped sharply in recent weeks due to a lack of pre-monsoon rainfall, high temperatures, and intense heat.

According to a report by the Central Water Commission, the water level in dams in the eastern region has fallen to 4.78 billion cubic meters, representing 21.8 percent of their total storage capacity. During the same period last year, water stocks stood at 24.6 percent.

The eastern region comprises major states such as West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Assam, along with the seven states of the North-Eastern region. Since the monsoon has arrived in West Bengal and Sikkim, good rainfall is expected there in the near future.

The western region of the country includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa. Water stocks in dams and reservoirs there stand at 31.1 percent of storage capacity—or 11.86 billion cubic meters (BCM)—which is slightly higher than the 30.1 percent recorded during the same period last year.

While the monsoon has reached parts of Maharashtra and Goa, it has yet to arrive in Gujarat. Gujarat is currently engaged in extensive cultivation of Kharif crops.
