Sugar Production in Maharashtra Drops by 25%
★ In the 2024-25 sugarcane crushing season, only 18 sugar mills are currently operational in Maharashtra, compared to 200 at the beginning of the season.
★ Sugar production so far has reached 7.974 million tonnes, down from 10.675 million tonnes during the same period last year.
★ Lower sugarcane yield and recovery rate are key reasons, with this year’s recovery at 9.46%, compared to 10.2% last year.
★ A significant portion of sugarcane was diverted for ethanol production.
★ All mills in Kolhapur, Solapur, and Amravati have already stopped operations, indicating an early end to the crushing season this year.
