New Delhi. The new season of sugarcane crushing and sugar production will formally start from October, but its pace will start increasing from November and after continuing till January-February, it will start slowing down from March.

Government data shows that at the national level, the sugarcane production area has increased by 57 thousand hectares from 57.11 lakh hectares last year to 57.68 lakh hectares this time,

but the apex industry body ISMA has expressed the possibility of some reduction in sugarcane acreage on the basis of satellite images.

Apart from this, there are reports of damage to sugarcane crop due to torrential rains, floods and waterlogging in some areas.

According to industry-trade analysts, sugar millers and distillers have been allowed to use sugarcane without control for ethanol production in the 2024-25 marketing season (October-September), whereas this time there is very little possibility of increase in sugarcane production. In view of this, sugar production may decrease.

According to industry analysts, about 320 lakh tonnes of sugar was produced domestically in the 2023-24 marketing season.

Even if the production falls by 10 lakh tonnes to 310 lakh tonnes in the 2024-25 season, there will be no problem because firstly this potential production is more than the domestic demand and consumption and secondly,

the industry already has a huge outstanding surplus stock of sugar. In view of this, there will be no crisis of supply and availability of sugar in the upcoming marketing season.
