Government Plans Record Procurement of Pulses and Oilseeds at MSP

New Delhi – Amid declining market prices of pulses below the Minimum Support Price (MSP), the Central Government is set to procure a record quantity of pulses and oilseeds to strengthen buffer stocks. The move comes as part of the Price Support Scheme (PSS) to ensure fair prices for farmers and stabilize the market.

Key Procurement Targets for 2024-25 (July-June Season):

  • Pulses: Around 50 lakh tonnes

  • Oilseeds: Over 60 lakh tonnes

Comparison with Previous Years:

  • The last record procurement was in 2017-18, with 65.50 lakh tonnes (45.50 LT pulses, 20 LT oilseeds).

  • In 2021-2230.30 lakh tonnes of pulses were procured.

  • In 2022-23, procurement was 28.30 lakh tonnes.

  • In 2023-24, procurement fell sharply to 6.90 lakh tonnes.

State-wise Procurement Plans for Pulses:

  • Major producing states: Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Tamil Nadu.

  • Rajasthan’s proposal5.40 lakh tonnes of gram, awaiting approval.

  • Current status: Government is actively procuring Tuvar, with purchases of Gram and Masoor expected next month.

Mustard Procurement for Rabi Season 2024-25:

  • 15 lakh tonnes of mustard purchase approved.

  • State-wise allocation:

    • Madhya Pradesh: 4.90 LT

    • Uttar Pradesh: 4.70 LT

    • Haryana: 3.30 LT

    • Gujarat: 1.20 LT

    • Assam: 62,774 tonnes

    • Chhattisgarh: 3,050 tonnes

  • Rajasthan’s proposal: 13.20 LT awaiting approval.

  • MSP for mustard: ₹5,950 per quintal, but market prices are softening due to increased supply.
