🇮🇳 India Sets Ambitious Target to Boost Oilseed Production to 700 Lakh Tonnes by 2030-31
📍 New Delhi – The Central Government has set a bold target to increase domestic oilseed production from the current 390 lakh tonnes to 700 lakh tonnes by the 2030-31 season. To achieve this, the government has launched the ‘National Mission on Edible Oils – Oil Seeds (NMEO-OS)’ with a ₹10,103.38 crore fund.
🌱 Why This Mission?
✅ 57% of India’s edible oil demand is met through imports, creating a huge dependence on foreign markets.
✅ The goal is to increase domestic oilseed production to reduce import dependence and ensure self-sufficiency.
✅ Special focus on mustard-rapeseed cultivation as a key oilseed crop.
🌴 Focus on Oil Palm Expansion
🔹 National Mission on Edible Oil – Palm has been launched to boost oil palm cultivation.
🔹 Target: Increase oil palm plantation area by 6.50 lakh hectares.
🔹 Key Focus Areas:
South India & Northeast Region for oil palm expansion.
Work progressing rapidly to develop self-reliance in palm oil production.
📈 Policy Support & Higher Import Duties
📢 To protect Indian oilseed farmers and support domestic production, the government has increased import duties on edible oils:
✔️ Crude edible oils: 27.5% duty
✔️ Refined edible oils: 37.75% duty
✔️ 20% increase in basic import duty on palm oil, soybean oil, and sunflower oil
