Melbourne. During the last one month, the price of Australian Desi gram has jumped by 50 to 100 dollars per tonne because its duty-free import has been allowed in India till October 2024, which has given new support to the market. On the one hand,

the off or lean season of gram supply is going on in Australia and the exportable stock has remained low, on the other hand, its demand remains strong in some other countries including India.

The Government of India is trying to ensure heavy import of gram for the next few months. The arrival of new crop of gram will start gaining momentum in Australia from October 2024.

Full preparations are being made for the delivery of goods to the ports there. The situation has become such that many ships have already been booked for export shipment of Desi gram from the ports of Queensland province from October 2024. Earlier,

due to heavy customs duty, irregular and limited quantity of gram was being imported from Australia to India, but now the obstacle of customs duty has been removed.

Weather conditions remain favourable for the production of gram in Australia's Queensland and northern New South Wales provinces,

but still producers are contracting the sale of their next crop in limited quantities as they expect its prices to rise further and faster in the coming months.
