The Indian government has extended the period for duty-free import of tur (pigeon pea) for another year, until March 31, 2026.

This decision was made to stabilize domestic supply and curb potential price hikes in the coming months.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) issued the notification on January 20, 2025, ensuring uninterrupted duty-free imports of tur.

This extension comes as the domestic production of tur is projected to rise by 2.5% in the 2024-25 season, but the output will still fall short of the country's annual consumption of 44-45 lakh tonnes.

Despite current softening prices, largely due to good supply from key producing states like Karnataka,

Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, the government is concerned that prices could rise during the off-season. The import extension aims to maintain market stability and avoid future price volatility.
