Sharp decline in soybean prices due to weak buying at high levels
New Delhi. For the past few weeks, the soybean market had been witnessing a relentless upward rally, with plant delivery prices climbing above ₹7,500 per quintal. This surge began to impact the trade of soybean oil and soymeal.
Slow Buying
In response, millers slowed down their procurement of soybeans at these high rates. Consequently, during the week of May 30–June 5, prices for this key oilseed dropped significantly across the top three producing states: Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Rajasthan.
Plant Prices
During the week under review, sharp declines in plant delivery prices were recorded: ₹425–₹700 per quintal in Madhya Pradesh, ₹200–₹950 per quintal in Maharashtra, and ₹800–₹850 per quintal in Rajasthan. For many plants, prices fell below the ₹7,000 mark.
Soy Oil (Refined)
The steep drop in soybean prices led to a softening of refined soy oil prices by ₹10–₹20 per 10 kg. At a plant in Nagpur, the price fell by ₹25 to settle at ₹1,490 per 10 kg.
Kota
In Kota, the price of soy oil slipped by ₹20 to ₹1,480 per 10 kg, while in Kandla, it remained steady at ₹1,460 per 10 kg. Farmers increased selling pressure to capitalize on the high market levels.
Arrivals
At the national level, soybean arrivals in mandis stood at 1.15 lakh bags on May 30; this figure surged to 2.15 lakh bags on June 1, improved to 2.25 lakh bags on June 2, and rose further to 2.55 lakh bags on June 3. However, as prices began to fall, soybean arrivals dropped to 1.80 lakh bags by June 5. Each bag weighs 100 kg.
Soybean Meal (DOC)
In Maharashtra, the price of soy DOC has seen a sharp decline of ₹2,000 to ₹5,000 per tonne, which could boost trade.
