Turmeric Prices Expected to Rise After a Dip
New Delhi: Despite increased sowing in producing centers during the current season, no significant increase in turmeric production is expected. This is because unseasonal rains in producing centers have damaged the turmeric crop in states other than Tamil Nadu. Therefore, production is likely to be only slightly higher than last year. Last year, the country's turmeric production was 72/75 lakh bags, which is estimated to be 80/82 lakh bags this year. Production in 2024 was estimated at 50/55 lakh bags.
State-wise Production Estimates
Traders say that the area under turmeric cultivation increased by approximately 30/35 percent this year in the producing centers, but adverse weather conditions have damaged the crop, affecting per-hectare productivity. The quality of the turmeric currently arriving in the markets is poor. Sources say that during the current season, turmeric production in the Marathwada region (Basmat, Hingoli, Nanded) will be around 32/35 lakh bags. Production in the Sangli region is projected to be 10/12 lakh bags. Production in the Nizamabad region is estimated at 12/13 lakh bags. Production in the Warangal region is estimated at 1.50/2 lakh bags, and in the Duggirala and Kadapa regions, it is estimated at 2.50/3 lakh bags. Production in the Erode and Salem regions is reported to be 14/15 lakh bags. Production in other areas is estimated at 5/6 lakh bags.
Lower Arrivals
During the current season, there has been a delay in the arrival of new stock, and the arrivals are also lower compared to last year. According to available information, on February 3rd last year, the arrival of new turmeric in Nizamabad was 13,500 bags, which decreased to 2,500 bags by February 10th. Currently, the arrival of new turmeric in the Nizamabad market is 8000/8500 bags. Arrivals in the Sangli and Erode markets are also lower compared to last year.
Market Trend
Due to the bearish trend in futures prices during the current week, spot market prices for turmeric also declined. Sources say that prices are falling due to a lack of demand. With arrivals expected to begin in other producing centers in the coming days, there is no possibility of a price increase in the near future. During the current week, spot prices for turmeric declined by ₹200-300 per quintal. Sources say that the arrival of the new crop will begin in the Marathwada region in the coming days. Therefore, there is little chance of a significant price increase in February-March. However, due to lower overall availability compared to consumption, a good price increase in turmeric can be expected in 2026. Currently, the price of single-polished turmeric in the Delhi market is being quoted at ₹153-155 per kg, which had touched ₹160-162 at the beginning of January. In September 2025, the price had fallen to ₹126-128.
Exports
According to data released by the Spices Board, turmeric exports during April-November 2025 were 127,530 tonnes, and the revenue earned from exports was ₹1951.34 crore. During April-November 2024, turmeric exports were 121,601 tonnes, and the revenue earned was ₹1984.47 crore. Total turmeric exports during the year 2024-25 (March-April) were 176,325 tonnes. The record export of turmeric was 183,868 tonnes in 2020-21.
