Wheat Cultivation Area Increasing in Many States

New Delhi. This year, Indian farmers are showing tremendous enthusiasm and interest in cultivating wheat, the most important food grain of the Rabi season, leading to a significant increase in the national production area.
According to the Central Ministry of Agriculture, the total area under wheat cultivation has increased to 275.66 lakh hectares this year, which is 17.18 lakh hectares more than last year's sowing area of 258.48 lakh hectares.
Wheat sowing has been completed in Punjab and Haryana, while the sowing process is still underway in several other states, including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, Gujarat, and Maharashtra. The normal average area for wheat cultivation is estimated at 312.25 lakh hectares.
Data from state agriculture departments shows that compared to last year, the area under wheat cultivation during the current Rabi season increased from 30 lakh hectares to 33.83 lakh hectares in Rajasthan by December 16, and from 8.39 lakh hectares to 9.23 lakh hectares in Maharashtra.
Similarly, by December 15, the wheat sowing area in Gujarat increased from 10 lakh hectares to 10.83 lakh hectares, and in Madhya Pradesh, by December 12, it increased from 81.86 lakh hectares to 83.52 lakh hectares.
Thus, the total area under wheat in these four states has jumped to 137.41 lakh hectares, which is 7.16 lakh hectares more than last year's sowing area of 130.25 lakh hectares. Wheat sowing is still ongoing in these states.
The Central Government has increased the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for wheat from Rs. 2425 per quintal for the 2024-25 season to Rs. 2585 per quintal for the 2025-26 season, an increase of Rs.
160, which has greatly encouraged farmers. In addition, the weather conditions have also been favorable for wheat sowing and crop growth.
