Agricultural products given more preference in the initial phase of India-US trade talks

The ongoing trade talks between India and the United States highlight a strategic focus on agricultural products in the initial phase of negotiations.
A committee of India's Niti Aayog has emphasized the importance of ensuring that any adjustments to customs duties are in India's favor, given the proposal for reciprocal tariffs.
While the US has indicated that high import duties on American products in India justify similar duties on Indian goods, the discussions have included ways to reduce tariffs and eliminate non-tariff barriers, particularly in agriculture and food products.
Experts believe that both countries could benefit from greater access to each other's markets by addressing these tariff and non-tariff barriers.
This is especially relevant for agricultural commodities like edible oil, pulses, dry fruits, tree nuts, and forest produce, where the nations are seen as complementary rather than competitive.
India could potentially increase its imports of these products from the US, which might also include lowering customs duties to facilitate trade.
However, the issue of protecting domestic agricultural interests remains a priority, ensuring that the local farming community’s needs are not overlooked in the process.
Meanwhile, the US is pushing for India to reduce import duties on automobiles as part of the broader trade discussions.
The talks are ongoing, with the potential to shape the trade landscape between the two countries, balancing tariffs and market access with agricultural interests
