Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated the formation of a severe cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal around October 26, which could strike the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. In light of this, an alert has been issued for both states.
A low-pressure area is currently developing over the southwestern part of the Bay of Bengal and the adjacent central-eastern region. Consequently, heavy rainfall accompanied by extremely strong winds is expected in the coastal areas. This system is likely to move in a west-northwesterly direction and is expected to intensify into a deep depression by October 25.
Following this, the storm is projected to gain further strength and intensity, potentially reaching the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha within the next two days, where it could cause significant disruption. This implies that the coastal region faces a potential threat from the cyclonic storm around October 27–28. Global weather models suggest that this will be a severe storm, characterized by very high wind speeds.
Separately, another low-pressure area is currently situated over the Arabian Sea, near the coast of southern Kerala; it may move forward and merge with the cyclonic storm originating from the Bay of Bengal. This is expected to lead to widespread heavy rainfall across South India over the coming week.
