Heavy rains in northern states affect harvesting of crops in Australia

The recent unseasonal heavy rains in northern Australia have disrupted the harvesting of winter crops, particularly in the southern Queensland province and northern New South Wales state.
These rains have caused delays in harvesting, and in some cases, have led to a deterioration in the quality of crops.
Experts have raised concerns that increased moisture content in the grains could lower their quality, potentially turning them from food-grade to animal feed if not harvested quickly.
Although some areas remained unaffected by the rain, harvesting was still hindered by extreme heat. Additionally, transportation issues have arisen due to water accumulation in fields and roads.
A notable incident in the western part of Brisbane saw a 12-hour stoppage in traffic due to an accident on a major highway.
However, the situation is not entirely bleak. Most crops in Queensland, except in the eastern Darling Downs region, have been successfully harvested, and the recent rains are expected to benefit the late-sown sorghum crop, with harvesting anticipated in early December.
Despite the challenges, Australia's Desi gram business remains robust. The export of gram is progressing rapidly from Brisbane port, with high buyer demand despite the rain-induced disruptions.
There have been reports of some buyers struggling to obtain sufficient quantities. Meanwhile, the wheat market is also active, with significant domestic trading continuing.
Overall, while the heavy rains have caused some short-term difficulties in harvesting and logistics, they are also expected to support the growth of some late crops, ensuring a steady agricultural market in the region.
