Mumbai. Due to torrential rains and flooding of fields over the past four weeks, kharif crops across 63,58,300 acres of land in Maharashtra have been reported damaged. Maharashtra's Agriculture Minister says that given the severity of the situation,

the government may seek a directive to declare a wet drought in the state. Kharif crops have been reported damaged due to floods and rain in 30 districts of Maharashtra.

When the government declares a drought, farmers receive assistance beyond compensation. Their electricity bills are waived, crop loan recovery is stopped, water tax is waived, and separate relief assistance is provided.

Opposition parties and agricultural experts are increasing pressure on the government to declare a wet drought. The Agriculture Minister says that this is being seriously considered, and farmers are also demanding it.

However, specific rules for declaring a wet drought remain, which the government will decide upon. Natural disasters have caused significant damage to kharif crops in several districts of Maharashtra, including Beed, Nanded, Solapur, Ratnagiri, Nagpur, and Chandrapur.
