Chandigarh. The Haryana government has decided to begin procurement of millet and moong for the Kharif season from September 23. Moong will be procured directly at the Minimum Support Price, while millet will be procured under the Price Difference Compensation Scheme.
According to a circular issued by the Haryana Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department, the responsibility for market procurement from farmers under the Price Difference Compensation Scheme has been assigned to HAFED and the Haryana State Warehousing Corporation from September 23. 60 percent of the market will be procured by HAFED and 40 percent by the Millet Warehousing Corporation.
Initially, millet will be procured at a rate of Rs. 2150 per quintal, and later, farmers will be paid Rs. 625 per quintal. This decision has been taken very thoughtfully and in the interest of farmers to ensure they receive additional income.
According to the circular, a fixed amount of Rs 625 per quintal will be provided to all farmers who sell their produce to government agencies or private firms. Regarding the benefits to farmers, it has been stated that even if a trader purchases millet at a price higher than Rs 2150 per quintal, they will still receive a government payment of Rs 625 per quintal. For example, if a farmer sells his millet to a trader at Rs 2175, he will receive a total return of Rs 2800 per quintal.
Similarly, if a trader purchases millet at Rs 2225, farmers will receive a return of Rs 2850 (Rs 2175 + Rs 625). The minimum support price for millet is fixed at Rs 2775 per quintal, and farmers will receive this price under all circumstances.
If the price of millet falls below Rs 2150 per quintal, government agencies will be prepared to purchase it. Millet will be procured only from genuine and registered farmers and proof of sale of millet sold to traders will have to be shown to compensate for the price difference.
Mung bean was procured at the minimum support price of Rs 8768 per quintal fixed by the Central Government. Earlier, its procurement was announced to start from October 1, but now it has been decided to start its procurement from September 23 (tomorrow) along with millet.
