Extremely Low Central Pool Stock: The main reason is that market prices are higher than the MSP.
Declining Stock Trend: In 2021-22, the stock was 3 million tons, while in 2022-23, it was 2.8 million tons, with chickpeas having the highest share.
Imports to Build Buffer Stock: Foreign tur and lentils were purchased and later sold in the markets.
Massive Imports in 2024: To meet demand, 6.2 million tons of pulses were imported, with peas accounting for almost half of this volume.
Pea Import Duty Reinstated: As of March 1, the import duty and restrictions on peas were restored. However, prices remained stable due to the huge stock at ports and new arrivals of chickpeas/peas.
Market Forecast (According to I-Grain India):
Short-term pressure on pea and chickpea prices due to arrivals.
Prices may rise later as demand picks up.
