Rising Oil Exports from Nepal to India
★ The SEA has stated that under SAFTA rules, SAFTA countries are using the agreement to dump their products into India without tariffs, putting pressure on domestic market prices and harming farmers and agricultural processors.
★ According to import-export data, between October 15, 2024, and January 15, 2025, Nepal imported 1,94,974 tons of edible oil (mainly crude soybean and sunflower oil) and exported 1,07,425 tons to India during the same period.
★ This import figure exceeds Nepal's monthly edible oil requirement (around 35,000 tons, annually 430,000 tons).
★ SEA has urged the government to intervene immediately.
