Small Cardamom Prices Rise; No Downturn Likely Soon

New Delhi: Informed sources indicate that the small cardamom crop due in August is likely to be affected by insufficient rainfall in Kerala, the major producing state. Additionally, demand at auction centers—driven by both exporters and the domestic market—is currently strong; consequently, prices have recently risen by ₹100–150 per kilogram, and trade estimates suggest further increases.

It is noteworthy that Indian cardamom exports have performed well during the current season due to a decline in production in both India and Guatemala. While Guatemala's small cardamom production typically hovers around 28,000–30,000 tonnes, adverse weather conditions this season have limited output to an estimated 20,000–22,000 tonnes. The new crop arrives in Guatemala during November–December, whereas fresh arrivals in India begin in July–August. Domestic production for the current season stood at 28,000–30,000 tonnes. Sources predict that the upcoming crop will be smaller than the current season's harvest, a factor that has fueled increased speculative activity in the market.

Prices

Rising prices at auctions in producing regions have led to a sharp increase in quotes at consumption centers. Currently, prices in the Delhi market range from ₹2,600 to ₹3,500 per kilogram, depending on quality, while average prices at auction centers are hovering around ₹2,830–2,840. Market sentiment remains bullish given the prevailing conditions. Sources believe that adverse weather is not only impacting production but is also expected to delay the arrival of fresh stock.

Exports

Indian small cardamom producers are reaping significant benefits from weak production in Guatemala. Consequently, during the 2025-26 fiscal year, exports of small cardamom surged by 124 percent in terms of volume and 134 percent in terms of earnings. According to data released by the Spices Board, small cardamom exports totaled 15,050 tonnes, generating revenue of ₹3,672 crore during 2025-26 (April–March). In contrast, exports stood at 6,728 tonnes with earnings of ₹1,566.82 crore during the 2024-25 fiscal year.
