According to the first NASS "Crop Progress Report" of the year, 5% of the U.S. winter wheat crop has headed, which is in line with the 5-year average. The crop quality rating stood at 48% good/excellent, with a Brugler500 Index score of 328 (on a scale of 100 to 500). This is down from 56% and a score of 348 at the same time last year, and also lower than last fall’s final rating of 55% and 348 points.
As of Sunday, 3% of the spring wheat planting had been completed, matching both last year’s progress and the 5-year average.
Following flooding in parts of the SRW (Soft Red Winter) region last week, the 7-day weather forecast suggests relatively dry conditions across most of the country, although some rainfall is expected in parts of the East Coast and Eastern Corn Belt (ECB).
Export inspection data shows that during the week ending April 3, total wheat exports amounted to 334,888 metric tons (12.3 million bushels). This was 33.12% lower than the previous week and 35.2% below the same week last year. Mexico was the largest destination, receiving 76,161 metric tons, followed by Japan with 60,797 metric tons and the Philippines with 56,400 metric tons.
Since June 1, total wheat exports for the marketing year have reached 17.69 million metric tons (650 million bushels), which is 15.1% higher than the same period last year.
