Major Impact on Sugar Production in Maharashtra
★ In the 2024–25 season, the state’s sugar production saw a significant 20% decline, falling from 9.52 million tons to just 7.61 million tons.
★ A record 92 sugar mills have shut down this year, including 40 in Solapur and 16 in Kolhapur, compared to only 36 closures last year.
★ The primary reasons are lower sugarcane availability and an increase in crushing capacity.
★ The average sugar recovery rate dropped from 10.04% last season to 9.37% this time.
★ The season started late, and a significant portion of the cane was diverted to ethanol production, further impacting sugar output.
★ According to ISMA, India’s total sugar production in 2024–25 could drop by around 15%, from 32 million tons to 27.2 million tons.
