Turmeric Prices Rise: No Recession Yet
02-Jan-2026 07:13 PM
New Delhi. Turmeric prices are currently rising steadily. Market sentiment remains bullish. Sources say that although a 30-35 percent increase in acreage was recorded this year at producing centers, adverse weather conditions after sowing have damaged crops in all areas except the Erode Line. Consequently, the upcoming harvest will not be as expected. Furthermore, stocks are also low. Market sources say that the current total turmeric stock is reported to be 8-10 lakh bags, compared to 18-20 lakh bags last year. Due to declining stocks and the possibility of a lower arrival of the new crop than forecast, turmeric prices are rising daily in the futures and spot markets. With the arrival of new supplies, there is no possibility of a slowdown in prices.
Production Estimates
Sources say that due to increased sowing at producing centers, the production was previously estimated to be around 90-92 lakh bags. However, due to crop damage, it is currently expected that production will be limited to 80-82 lakh bags. It is noteworthy that the national turmeric production estimate for 2024 was 50-55 lakh bags and for 2025, it was 70-75 lakh bags.
Price
Given the current situation, a price decline is unlikely. Due to a shortage of stocks, arrivals to the markets have decreased. Furthermore, new arrivals on the Nizamabad line will begin by the end of January. Until then, the market will remain strong. I Grain India periodically updates its readers with reports on the slow rise in commodity prices. In December, it was reported that the price of turmeric single polish in the Delhi market could soon touch ₹160. At that time, the price was circulating at ₹150. Currently, prices have crossed ₹160 and are being quoted at ₹165. Sources believe that a further increase of ₹8-10 per kg in prices is possible. It is noteworthy that since September, turmeric prices have already increased by ₹35-38 per kg. In September, prices in the Delhi market were ₹126-128, which increased to ₹140-142 in October and ₹148-150 in November. Prices in Delhi were quoted at ₹158-160.
Export
In the first seven months of the current financial year 2025-26, turmeric exports registered a 2 percent increase in volume, but revenue declined by 5 percent due to lower prices. According to data released by the Spices Board, during April-October 2025, turmeric exports amounted to 111,117 tonnes, generating revenue of ₹1,694.31 crore. Whereas in April-October 2024, turmeric exports amounted to 1,08,880 tonnes, generating export revenue of ₹1,784.20 crore. During 2024-25 (April-March), total turmeric exports were 1,76,325 tonnes.
